Iran has claimed another remarkable advancement in the field of defense technology by introducing what it describes as the world’s first submarine drone carrier — a development that defense experts are calling a unique military achievement.

This modern submarine, presented under the name Fateh Submarine, is said to have the capability to launch suicide attack drones and is being viewed as a new dimension in naval warfare strategy.

In February 2019, the submarine was formally inducted into the Iranian Navy. It is being described as the first submarine in the world capable of launching drones both from underwater and from the surface. The vessel reportedly has the ability to deploy combat drones such as Ababil and Arash, which can be used to target sensitive enemy installations.

One of the key features of this submarine is its endurance — it can reportedly remain at sea for approximately 35 days without refueling. Powered by a diesel-electric engine, the submarine is capable of operating with extreme stealth, earning it the nickname “Silent Killer.” Its quiet operational capability allows it to evade enemy radar and sonar systems while carrying out missions.

In addition to safeguarding maritime boundaries, the submarine is also capable of laying naval mines. Furthermore, it can fire torpedoes designed to track and destroy enemy warships. Through advanced engineering, missile technology has been miniaturized and integrated to enhance targeting precision and operational effectiveness.

Defense analysts state that both radar and sonar systems are typically used to monitor enemy movements above and below water, and this submarine is claimed to possess the ability to evade both detection systems.

Iranian engineers assert that this technology represents a strong example of self-reliance within the country’s defense industry.

According to various global reports on submarine fleets, the United States operates approximately 70 submarines, Russia around 63, China about 61, while Iran reportedly possesses around 25 submarines. Among Islamic nations, Iran is considered a leader in submarine technology and is often ranked as the fourth-largest submarine operator globally.

While military powers often emphasize balance and deterrence, the ultimate goal of technological advancement should be the protection of humanity and the promotion of stability. It is hoped that nations will choose the path of peace, knowledge, and development over conflict.
